WELCOME BACK, HUNAMS!

It's been one long ride. Way too long, to be quite honest. We set out on a mission to conquer the galaxy Star Control 2's soundtrack and set down our own flags remixes in its place. Along the way we gained the help from various alien species guest artists and upgraded our flagship core team to handle any situation the enemy time might throw at us. Turns out it wasn't enough.

Defeated and dejected, the core team drifted apart. Guest artists were lost along with the mailboxes that contained their original communications. Tough remixes like the Intro and Outro were attempted time and again only to meet with failure at every turn. Valiant new guest artists stepped in to fill our oversized shoes, but even that wasn't enough.

Until now.

The final pieces of the puzzle fell into place recently with the submission of the last remaining remixes, leaving only the drudgery of assembling the whole thing into a coherent package. That task is now complete, and the fruits of our years of work (or lack of) are now available to sample for everyone. With the release of Remix Pack 4, the Precursors project is done. Our goal has been met, and the team may return to its restful slumber, perhaps to awake again in a different age when needed once more.

We would like to thank every one of you for the support you have given us through the years. The feedback we got from this project has been amazing and humbling, and the criticism for our lateness has been well deserved. We have seen our fair share of progress and setbacks, of triumph and defeat. We received help from extremely talented artists when it was needed the most, allowing us to finally get to the point where a release was possible. I can't thank you enough for what you've done.

With this final memorandum the Precursors project is laid to rest, hopefully to be enjoyed by hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the years to come.

Enjoy!

THE STORY SO FAR

For the past decade, Earth and the rest of the Alliance of Free Stars has fought the Ur-Quan and their Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. In the course of the War, the Earthlings discovered a factory world by the 'Precursors' - an impossibly advanced race that disappeared tens of thousands of years ago. This colony, Unzervalt (aka Vela I), lost all contact with Earth shortly after landfall.

You are Captain Zelnick, a human that was born on Unzervalt and who possesses a remarkable knack for Precursor technology. You were the one who worked out how to activate the Precursor installation.

It was a factory for building starships. However, Unzervalt is mineral-poor, and there were not enough materials available to construct a complete vessel. Your task is to command this craft, the Vindicator, and return to Earth to tell them of the abandoned colony. Also, if the War with the Ur-Quan continues, you must fight for Earth and the Alliance as best you can.

So what is this all about?

The Star Control 2 music remixing project started in August 2002 – At the same time as when Toys For Bob released the partially ported sources of the 3DO version of Star Control 2 to the fan community.

Riku Nuottajärvi got the idea for remixing all of the 69 Star Control 2 songs for the remake – but the project just looked too big for one composer to do alone. Toys For Bob was really interested in Riku’s idea for bringing all of the music to the “new age” – so they asked him to manage the project and invite people from the fan community to join the remixing project.

All the original composers were contacted and the fan community was informed about the ongoing project. A lot of people were involved in the project, but sadly, many of them “vanished” while the project went on. However, at the same time, the core group started to form.

After many months of work, the core group of remixers formed PRECURSORS in October 2003. Precursors is the collective effort of four individual artists; Riku Nuottajärvi (author of some of the original songs in the 1992 version of Star Control 2, everybody remembers Hyperspace, right?), Jouni Airaksinen, Tore Aune Fjellstad and Espen Gätzschmann.

Precursors' mission is to bring, to all Star Control 2 fans, wonderful Star Control 2 inspired music – not just re-makes of the old songs, but also totally different versions and brand new songs.

We hope you enjoy the PRECURSORS' music.
