Title: Slylandro Probes - We Come In Peace!
Remix Pack: 2 - Neutral Aliens, Don't Shoot!
Track #: 3
Length: 2:58
Remixed by: Espen Gätzschmann and Tore Aune Fjellstad
Original written by: Dan Nicholson
Remix of: PROBE.MOD
Comments: While the original didn't offer much in the way of melody, we wanted to change this. The probes are confused, badly coded, and fast. The remix attempts to reflect these things. This is an improved version of the one that was released as a preview.

This is just brilliant--just perfect, I love it!
0:00 - oh, first contact with a new species!
0:07 - come again?
0:20 - right, got it, you come in peace--are you ok?
0:33 - AHH, IT'S TRYING TO KILL ME!

The musical ambiguity in the beginning makes the probes come off likeable enough but that moment where the minor chord comes in at 0:33 tells you your doomed. The music is technical, but has certain sadness about it--like in the later game, when you've become calloused to destroying yet another hapless probe. There's enough garbled "we come in peace" to drive the point home without becoming annoying.

I've been listening to all four albums and aside from Under a Red Sky, this is my favorite mix by far, and I wouldn't change a thing about it!

This remix is pretty nice compared to the original... PRIORITY OVERRIDE NEW BEHAVIOUR DICTATED.

This certainly adds a nice melody that the original didn't have. But that said, the original definitely sounded broken, and this one is a bit too coherent. I'd have thought something crazy like Squarepusher-ish would've fitted the Probes.

But it's definitely a nice tune though!

Truly excellent! It's something you never get tired of, so you might even want to try talk to them every once in a while when you bump into them.

It's also a fantastic piece of work if it were to stand alone.

Should play this on a tesla coil speaker...

Also, I get the impression these guys are supposed to be confused and malfunctioning with a heavy dose of multiple personality disorder. So yeah, broken speech in multiple voices played at different rates with random filters. Low quality audio works for these guys.

This tune is definitely a step beyond the original. I actually wish this tune had been used as an optional melee music (perhaps with the probes only). The tempo and beat is really catchy and good for melee.

I'd always thought the original Slylandro music was a little uninspired (couple that with the frustration at having to fight them early in the game when you have puny ships) and irritating. This is stellar by comparison.

It's not mechanical enough. It sounds too organic, to orderly. I think it would sound better if it were colder, more lifeless. More "we come in peace," in different tones, maybe alien jabber.

I dunno what you people are talking about... This is a definite improvement on the original...

Catchy.

Hmm... sounds nice as a standalone melody, but lacks compared to the original.

Doesn' sounds anymore like they're transmitting 'We come in peace' in all possible languages at same time... nor like you're stopped midspace, negotiating with one of those things...

NB: different voices/pitches in the remix, I think you've got a winner

Censored: I think a few more "we come in peace" in different pitches etc.

I agree. A good adaptation of an otherwise impossible tune. With these changes it will be just right. Just don't over do it. Make the balance. Keep it up.

The melodization was an excellent idea and the improvement on the original is in my opinion greatest of all of the remixes. It reflects the probes perfectly and the melodic part is also musically very nice.

Quite good! Better then the original, though I would add the same comment as someone below already said: it would not be a bad idea to add the voice(s) "We come in peace" in different pitches. I think that was one of the strongpoints of the original. In the remix, it's only one voice you hear, almost always on the same pitch.

If you add the different voices/pitches in the remix, I think you've got a winner.

I love this tune! What a great way of capturing the probes' confusion. I'd have to say that this song is particularly important, since outside of the Starbase Commander and Hyperspace themes it's probably one you hear most often at the beginning of the game. Excellent work!

Can't really compare this with the original, as the composers wrote. I'd have to check it in game to see if it fits. Otherwise (tonally) it sounds very good!
I agree on the confusion/speed theme, but I think (can't check it obviously) a few more "we come in peace" in different pitches etc. (as in the original) would add a bit more 'electro-synthetic probe in while(1) loop' feeling ;)
